is your system version really 10.6.1? Then probably upgrading to a more recent 10.6 version may solve your problem. Also 4GB RAM is not really much - do your projects have many software instruments tracks? Then don't run any application parallel to GarargeBand, i.e. not Safari, iPhoto, Aperture, iMovie ..

Or have you installed anything else lately? Any other software at all? Sometimes the installation of third party software corrupts the System Library and other programs will have problems with missing or wrong library items.
