At Low End Mac, we continued to use Mac OS 9.2.2 daily well into 2013, albeit via Classic Mode in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. We’ve scoured the Web in search of online stores that have the Classic Mac OS available, and we’ve found System 6.0.8 on floppies, Mac OS 9.2.2 CDs, and many versions in between. Compare that to Mac OS X which has a low base price ($20), with the only other option being a $20 add-on to enable server functionality. Windows 8 server will run you well over $40, and it's. IOS upgrades aren't always free. Take a look at the fetures you get with XP and make the comparison. Pay $129 a year for the upgrades of MAC OS X or pay over $400 for XP Professional (at release time). It is a choice everybody makes but complaining about the pricing doesn't change the fact that what you get is a far superior system. If I were to buy a Mac today with similar specifications, I’d be looking at $2000 or more. Instead, the RAM, SSD’s, and tools can be purchased for a fraction of the price (under $250). What I do on my Mac with the Upgrades. I use my Mid-2012 MacBook pro every day for anywhere from 8-12 hours per day. Download at least OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo). This will update your 10.7.0 installation to 10.7.3 and contains all other point releases in between (10.7.1.& 10.7.2). Other Lion Combo Updates are available here: OS X Lion Combo Update search.
